Amphigorey Too was published in 1975 by G. Putnam's Sons, New York in illustrated boards with a matching dust wrapper. The copy I am showing has been signed by Mr. Gorey. Surprisingly, this title has only ever had one hard cover printing. Amphigorey Too is currently available as a large scale paperback.
In this second anthology of Edward Gorey's works, we are once again treated to reprints of titles that (then and now) can be difficult to find in their original printings. All but one of the titles included in Amphigorey Too were published as limited edition volumes, and this was the first time most of them had been reprinted. In addition to showing The Chinese Obelisks in its completed state, Mr. Gorey's original sketches are also shown, giving a glimpse into his working process. To the right, I am showing the original announcement card for this book.
I've read Amphigorey. Now I want to read Too! These are the type of books that I can go back to over and over again. And, dare I say it, they make THE best bathroom books.
ReplyDeleteThe anthologies are the easiest way to become familiar with Mr. Gorey's works...15 books for the price of one (or one and a half)...
ReplyDeleteEvery one of these is a treasure - indeed, a wonderful way to be introduced into his world -
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere that the pictures in Amphigoreys are very small and for that reason have not ordered them (I can't find them in bookstores around here), but maybe I should.
ReplyDeleteActually, the images in the Amphigorey anthologies are done to the correct size for the original printings. The only experience you miss with the Amphigorey formats is the surprise you get when you turn a page of a Gorey book you have not read before. In the anthologies, the images are two or four to the page. Mr. Gorey paid attention to the size of a book and how it would feel in your hands as you read it. This is why Gorey books are rarely the same size as one another.
ReplyDeleteSome of the more recent reprints of individual books have been reduced in size, but not the Amphigorey books.
