On Tuesday June 8, Swann Auction Galleries in New York City sold a costume sketch by Edward Gorey for the 1977 Broadway production of Dracula. Created for the character Jonathan Harker, the costume design was originally presented to actor Alan Coates who portrayed Harker in the stage play. For the Broadway production, Mr. Gorey presented each actor with a costume sketch for his/her character. The full color rendering is signed lower right by Mr. Gorey.
Original artwork from Dracula very rarely becomes available, so the final bid price was not a surprise. Also, prices for original artwork by Edward Gorey have continued to climb, and watercolor pieces always command a premium.

Over $7000 after buyer's premium, too! Someone really wanted this badly.
